The Taxi Recapitalisation South Africa (TRSA) is driving meaningful change within South Africa’s Minibus Taxi Industry (MTI)
TRSA serves as a catalyst for making improvements in the minibus taxi industry that are geared towards reform and transitioning the industry into a sustainable, trusted and better positioned key role player in the country’s public transport space.
Our mandate is clear
To accelerate the transformation of the minibus taxi industry (MTI) by advancing formalisation, economic empowerment and responsibly integrate technology that prepares the taxi industry for long term growth.
Through practical implementation, strategic partnerships and sector wide collaboration, TRSA is building a modern, accountable and future ready minibus taxi ecosystem.
THE MINIBUS TAXI INDUSTRY
The MTI plays an indispensable role in the country’s public transport ecosystem, transporting over 70% of daily commuters, the majority of whom rely on it as a primary mode of transport. Despite its scale and significance, the industry remains largely informal, under regulated and technologically outdated, which limits its potential to contribute meaningfully to broader national objectives such as economic inclusion, safety and sustainable mobility.
Modernising the industry would improve service quality, commuter safety and operational efficiency, while also opening pathways for funding, innovation, skills development, job creation and integration with other modes of public transport.
To unlock this potential, the MTI must evolve into a structured, transparent and technologically integrated sector that benefits both operators and commuters, while aligning with the South African government’s vision for a unified, safe and reliable public transport system.
VITAL CONTRIBUTION
Given the industry’s vital contribution to daily commuting and its position as a backbone of urban and rural connectivity, the transformation and formalisation of the MTI is not just desirable, it is essential.
